Craps Strategy | Craps Guide

When building a craps strategy, the most important aspect is understanding the odds. This guide will briefly discuss strategies related to both playing the odds and more general hints. Before you read this, it is suggested you read the craps overview and the craps odds guide.

Craps is a game of chance, and it is important to understand that at the end of the day the house always has the edge. However, understanding the odds can help a craps player make effective decisions which will enhance the quality of their play.

  • Expect 7s-  With slightly less than 1/5 of all dice rolls resulting in 7, it is safe to assume you’ll see quite a few. If the outcome being a 7 is in your favor, by all means, take this opportunity to bet on 7s.  Keep this in mind when rolling for a pass.

  • Be aware of the risk/reward ratio-  Sometimes the earnings don’t always match up with the rewards. For instance, your odds of winning a bet on rolling a 7 is roughly 1 in 5, but the payout is only 1 in 4. In this instance, the player will be betting at a major loss against the house. A low odds:payout ratio will kill your bankroll fast if you’re not careful.

  • Quit While You’re Ahead- If you’ve never heard the phrase Gambler’s Ruin, well, know you have.  A player at a casino will almost always lose their money if they play for a long period of time.  When playing craps, the house always has the advantage.  There are ways to minimize it and methods of betting so the odds are temporarily in your favor, but in the long run the house is always going to come out on top.

  • Practice- Playing for free until you learn how to apply strategies and get a feel for how the game is played is the most important thing you can do. Visit websites such as Golden Palace, play some craps and get involved.

  • Wager Only Want You Are Comfortable With Losing-  Never try to make up losses by betting more than you intended to wager.  If you’re down, sometimes it is best to just cut your losses and head home and give it a try another day.  A player who is angry or upset at the game may bet more than they can afford to try and recoup their losses.  Set a limit for acceptable losses and when you go over it, call it a night.
